I am planning a solo trip and I am female. I am in the process of buying a plane ticket to Jordan and noticed that a lot of the tickets have 1:30am departure times.

I was planning on taking the bus from Amman which I read runs every two hours at night. Would it be safe to be out on the street or at the bus station say at 11:30 at night?

You could use a taxi to reach the bus station. It will be safer.

The airport express bus (used to be yellow - is it still?) passes a bus stop at the SE corner of the 7th Circle in Amman. This is a busy bus stop where lots of minibuses going south along the airport highway stop, so there are always people. The 7th Circle in general is a busy traffic spot and usually has policemen present. The scheduled departure time of the airport bus is from a terminal elsewhere in the city, so it usually reaches the 7th Circle some 15 minutes after that, but it is best to be very flexible with this and be at the bus stop early. Place you luggage close to the kerb so that the bus driver will notice he has a passenger. Taxi drivers might stop and offer you a ride. If the fare is only a little higher than the bus (for example JD 5) there is no reason to decline. These highly discounted offers exist because the driver may already have a paying passenger to the airport, or a fully paid fare back into town, or he is heading south anyway (with or without a paying passenger). A normal taxi fare (with you as the only passenger) to the airport is officially over JD 20, but with some haggling you can normally reduce it to 10 or 12.
