HI There, spending some days travelling round Jordan next week with some friends, a few days in Ammann and then travelling to and from Petra, stopping off at various spots en rounte. Does anybody have any info/advice/ experiences to share with a gay traveller about how open is the society and r there any particular gay friendly places or places to avoid.

Thank u

J

Jordan is a very conservative country. While you are there you will probably notice that a lot of Jordanian men wear a lot of hair gel and tight clothes and hold hands walking down the street. This is not because Jordan is an open-minded place; it's because homosexuality is so far from acceptable to acknowledge in public in Jordan that men can do this without being accused of being gay. I would recommend in the strongest possible terms against making your sexuality clear to any locals who you do not explicitly know will be accepting.

When I was in Amman I wasn't looking to hang out in the gay scene much, but Books@Cafe is a place that is popular both with expats and the local gay community.

All that said, I loved my time in Jordan. Enjoy your trip!

cheers, thanks for that. dont expect to be seeking out a scene r anything like that, just interested in hearing other peoples experiences. visiting a friend who lives there which is always a good way to be introduced to a new country.
Thanks again

There are gays in Jordan, like in any other country in the world, but you need to keep a low profile as it is not acceptable to display one's homosexuality in public. I'd suggest hanging out in places which are popular with expats - Bookcafe, Cantaloupe...
