How do people at the Petra Nationa Park verify whether you are spending the day, or sleeping there?
I ask this because I will be sleeping in Petra 1 night, and therefore I should pay half price (55 JDN), but I wonder if I must take my passport or my hotel confirmation in order to buy this ticket? Im traveling independently so wont have an agency to do anything for me.

You're fine.

If they ask just tell them where you're staying.

BTW - You don't pay half price. 55JD is the price. There is an extra surcharge if you aren't spending the night in Jordan. Those people pay almost double.

laketraveller - So far we've gotten 3 different emails recommending guides. All claim to be tourists from the USA, yet clearly they aren't based on the structure of the email and the fact that they didn't just give us the recommendation here on this thread.... We've deleted them all and are only looking at guides with multiple recommendations from forums we check, or from other travelers we've met recently.

Thanks!

Ya, that's too bad. There are many experienced travelers here who just want to help, but there are also the touts and scammers who are just after your wallet.

They are easy to recognize though.

One good source for well respected Bedouin guides in Wadi Rum is www.jordanjubilee.com. I'd trust anyone Ruth recommends on that web site.

Have a great trip.

I am a "real" American as opposed to a scammer. Last month I travelled from Eliat to Wadi Rum where I stayed for a few days with a Bedouin family. Mohammed Domiyn is a guide and offers visitors a choice of a guest room in his home or his tent in the desert (I recommend the desert). His family is very hospitable, the food is great. Mohammed's website is www.wadirumaccommodation.com. His contact info is email: md_wadirum@yahoo.com, phone: (+962) 77 970 5907. I had a wonderful experience with Mohammed and Nida.

I crossed the border at Eliat last month and again a few days ago. It was very quick. There are very few people crossing.

I might also add, if you have time on your way up to Amman, stop by the Dead Sea Harmony Center (http://deadseaharmonycenter.wordpress.com/) located at the southern tip of the Dead Sea in Al Mazra'ah. William Alajalian has started a wonderful permaculture center here.
