We are headed to Jordan via Eliat in a few weeks, and will be going to see Wadi Rum and Petra before heading to Amman to catch a flight.

Since Wadi Rum is closer to Eliat we were thinking we should start by crossing the border and going directly there. My issue is whether or not we'll be able to get there in time for some sightseeing in the desert and then a night in a camp since we aren't sure how long the border crossing will take. Is this possible or is it just easier to head to Petra first, arrange our Wadi Rum visit there, and then backtrack up to Amman?

I can't answer your question since you don't say what time you'll be crossing the border into Jordan. If it's at 8am, then yes you'll have time; if it's at 6pm, then no you won't.

Assuming there are no issues with the border crossing it shouldn't take you more than around 2 hours or a little more to cross, catch a taxi to Wadi rum and get there. If you do that first thing in the morning you'll have plenty of time to take your four hour tour and get to the camp.

My suggestion is to book your preferred camp ahead of time so they can be expecting you.

Then you can leave the next morning for Wadi Musa (Petra) and on to Amman from there.

Good luck.

Just realized I misspelled Eilat...doh!

Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't specify a time because we haven't planned a time yet. If we can leave in the morning and get there at a reasonable hour then we'll leave in the morning and give it a shot.

Hi, I'm doing the same trip in September and have been quoted 50JD from the Jordanian side of the border to Petra.

However as far as i'm aware there are taxis waiting at the border and you might find somebody to share with.

Hello,
If you want a Taxi from Eilat to Wadi Rum it is cost 35 JD.
Then the next morning you can go with Petra bus and it is cost 5 JD per person.

have a good trip.

Just watch out for Petra entrance fees. They changed the prices (double) last year, and now it costs ± 100 JD for a day if you are not staying locally.
