Hi,
we will be in Egypt early next year and hope to crossover to Jordan (Aqaba, Petra, Wadi Rum) for a week. I heard that it is possible to cross from TABA (instead of Nuweiba) by a sort of "private" ferry...the advantage being that one can get a free Jordanian visa (not possible if leaving from Nuweiba). However, I am not sure if this "private" ferry is only for tour groups? Anybody has used it? Also, how difficult is it to travel on one's own after arriving in Jordan (to Petra and Wadi Rum).Reasonably prized tours available from Aqaba???
Would appreciate any info. Thanks.

You can get the free visa if you arrive in Aqaba from any point, whether from Nuweiba, by land through Israel of ir you land at Aqaba airport.

See www.jordanjubilee.com/travelme/sinai.htm for further information.

Some people have said these ferries from Taba exist, but I lived in Sinai and never heard of them, so really can't give a definite answer. But if getting a free visa is all you're worried about, then you can leave on the ferry from Nuweiba. Visas are done on the ferry and are free, as are visas if you go overland through Israel.
