Hi everyone,

we have just booked our fights for Jordan, we'll be staying for 10 full days, then fly out on the 11th day.

We are planning to hire a car for 7 days and explore Amman, Madaba and Jerash without one for the other three days before getting the car.

Can someone please give us approximate driving times between the following destinations:

Dana - Wadi Musa
Wadi Rum to Madaba
Airport to Wadi Mujib (we will probably pick the car up at the aiport so we dont have to drive in Amman)
Wadi Mujib to Kerak
Kerak to Dana
Wadi Musa to Wadi Rum (where you would meet your guide)

i am wondering if we can pick up a rental car, drive to Wadi Mujib and still do a hike on that day? We haven't quite decided on which trail we would like to do, but do they all start at say 8 or 9am sharp? If so then I'm thinking we won't make it. If we decide do to the unguided Siq trail, could we do that one whenever we arrive or at a set time only?

Can you drive from your hotel in Wadi Musa to the entrance of Petra, park there all day and then in the evening drive back to your hotel? I figure if we are already paying for a rental car we might as well use that rather than paying for a taxi. How safe is parking there? Obviously we wouldn't leave anything in the car.

I'm sure some of you Jordan experts out there can shed some light on this ;)

Cheers!

We recently returned from a two week trip to Jordan, staying at the Evason Ma'In for a week with our own car. By way of reference, this is fairly close to Wadi Mujib. Here are my estimates for driving time based on our experiences.

Dana - Wadi Musa - about an hour

Wadi Rum to Madaba - at least four hours. We flew from Amman to Aqaba and did Wadi Rum from that base.

Airport to Wadi Mujib (we will probably pick the car up at the aiport so we dont have to drive in Amman) - two hours. On the map it looks a lot closer but this trip is complicated by a few factors. You are going to miss the main road (35) from the airport to Madaba and from there on to Wadi Mujib. There is a lot of construction from the airport to Amman and that road is not marked. Not to worry, you can take the exit marked "Dead Sea" and that will put you on 40. 40 leads to the Dead Sea highway and from there down to Wadi Mujib. Also going through the suburbs of Amman and outlying towns slows traffic considerably.

Wadi Mujib to Kerak - about an hour

Kerak to Dana - 2 hours

Wadi Musa to Wadi Rum (where you would meet your guide) - we did not do this drive so I do not have a good estimate.

Re: driving to Petra & parking. We did this, driving down for the day, parking and drove back. We parked in a parking lot off the street. Our car was fine. Not sure if we were "allowed" to park there but we did. However, a Wadi Musa expert may have better advice. I suspect a taxi to the entrance from Wadi Musa wouldn't be very much.

Wadi Musa to Wadi rum- between 1.30 to 2 hours drive.
From Wadi Rum to Madaba it might take you less time if you take the Desert Highway (boring but fast): it's 4 hours from Aqaba to Amman via the DH and the distance is longer that from WR to Madaba.
