I decided to fly from Bangkok to Amman in route to Israel where my friend lives. I plan to stay around 2 nights in Amman, to rest up after the long flight and see some of the sights. I basically just want a cheap but decent place to rest. I need to know the best way to get to this place from the airport, do I use a taxi-the cost, will they rip me off. I really have no clue about Jordan at all. So it will be an adventure. I like to walk around so I need to be located somewhere that is possible to do. In addition, a place where other travelers are would help as well and a place that will be able to suggest or arrange day trips, etc. I will be going in July.

Also they would help to arrange your airport pick up & arrange day trips as well.
We stayed in the Palace Hotel last year - very central, cheap, but not a great place. There are loads of other places around there. You might also try the Farah Hotel or Cliff Hostel. Check out our trip travelogue (stories and photos) at www.geocities.com/PaulKilfoil/2008.htm</a>.
Take the airport bus into the city then a taxi from there. The taxi should be 2 JD (perhaps 3), no more. Amman is up and down, so it is really tough walking any distance with luggage.

bf942 - check this resources;
its has alot of useful information on hotels starting from 3 hotels to 5 .
Let me know if it was helpful

I accidentally wrote hotel in my original post. What I am looking for is a decent youth hostel or guest house. I am on a tight budget, basically just need a bed and a place to shower. But don't want a dump either. Is it best just to take the bus into town and find one? Or should I have a reservation? My flight comes in around 6am so I will have time to look around. However, I know I will be dead tired as I will have been flying for over 11 hours. Suggestions most welcome. Thanks for all the responded so far.
The Palace Hotel, Farah Hotel and Cliff Hostel are all very cheap. You will probably find a place to stay if you just arrive, but be warned that Amman is very hilly and you will tire you out fast if you're humping heavy luggage from hostel to hostel. Having said that, there are several cheap places not far from the Palace/Farah - not much walking needed.
