Hello,

I will be in Jordan for 10 days starting on 25 November 08. Was wondering how much you guys think I will need? My main problem is I'm travelling alone (female, 23 years old, Chinese) so for safety reasons I will probably get single rooms or catch taxis if things get a little overwhelming (its my first trip overseas alone, and I chose an exciting place for it!).

I am hoping to cover Amman, Jerash, Madaba, Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum (if I can find people to join up for a tour or camp).

Then I'm heading to Aqaba to get a ferry into Egypt on 5 December - Another question is: 5 Dec is a Friday. i've read elsewehre that this may be a problem with frequency of public transport. Does anyone know whether ferries run on Fridays?

I am hoping to bring $1500 AUD, plus $400 US. This money I'm aiming to cover both Jordan & Egypt. I'm on a tour in Egypt and all other accommodation is already booked so there shouldnt be much I have to pay on top.

Any advice or rough estimate would be great! I just don't want to bring all my money onto this trip as I am based in HK for this holiday and will be devastated to have a further 3 weeks in HK & China with no money!

Thank you in advanced!

Anyone travelling Jordan those dates and interested in joining up to reduce costs can also contact me!

Cheers,
Michelle

MishMish; Just make sure you do not tell anyone you are on your own, you do not have to tell that to anyone - whether it being your hotel or people in the streets. Just get your family to call your hotel through the reception so they know you are accounted for if you can call it that.

Also, are taxis safer for single women or buses? In buses at day time there are many people in them as opposed to taxis where it would just be you and the driver....NEVER sit infront , just sit behind in the taxi, do not taxi the taxi if there is more than 1 person in there, like if the driver has a friend or somethng. Also , speak on the mobile phone when you are in the taxi even in English so the taxi driver knows someone is keeping an eye on you.

Mishmish (btw is your name a coincidence - it means Apricot in Arabic) - you will be fine. I've travelled throughout the Middle East as a lone woman.

#1 is right about not sitting in the front of taxis - it gives a message. I got busses - no problem. You'll probably meet other travellers in your hostel - if you decide to stay in them and can then travel with them. If someone is asking too many questions etc. just say you are meeting your friend, or your friend is waiting for you etc. Generally Jordan is a very safe country and you'll be fine.

BTW for 10 days you have more then enough! I'd really encourage you to stay in the backpacker places to meet people and think about some public transport as it by quite lonely otherwise!

Mishmish; I spent 10 days in Jordan in October and I visited Amman, Jerash, Madaba, Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum like you are planing.
I spent about 50 JD or 70 US $ a day. I stayed in budget hotels with single rooms and private bathrooms, had two meals a day in budget restaurants and went by bus or taxi several times a day. A single room in a budget hotel costs about 25 - 30 US $ a night and a decent meal between 7 and 14 US $.

For more information about accommodation and transportation see my previous threads.

The info Martin gave is standard for any female travelling alone anywhere and not specific to Jordan I might add.

Jordan is a very safe place and I've never met anyone who felt unsafe - however, standard
care practises should always be followed. Nevertheless, you will find that all taxi drivers and guides and whatevers will chat away like normal to you asking persona questions how old are you and where are you from, are you married etc. Its really very normal,
however, as advised sit in the back seat always (women never sit in the front seat in Jordan) and just act like you don't understand if you don't want to answer the questions.

For Amman there is a very nice Amman Tour Bus which will take you around all day and you can get on and off as many times as you like. $13 or thereabouts.

The public transport buses to most of the places you mentioned are usually very full and difficult for foreigners to co-ordinate. However, I guess it might be an adventure. There
is no public transport to the Dead Sea.

What Jodah spent is about right.

Thank you very much for all your advice! I'm very excited at the prospect of being 'alone' to tackle everything and meeting new people. I will take all your comments on board and run with it when I'm there!

Thanks!
Mish
