I'm going to Jordan for 2 weeks soon, all I have booked so far is 2 nights in Madaba straight from airport, then nothing booked for a few days, then 4 nights at Petra. At some stage I want to visit the Dead Sea and bob around in it. Hotels are so expensive there though. Can anyone suggest a cheap way of spending a day there, where from/how to get there, etc? I also want to visit the baptism site and it looks like I could do both in one day.

For bathing in the Dead Sea, use Amman Beach. For your entrance fee you get the use of an outdoor pool, beach side showers toilets and changing facilities. There is also a cafe and some tourist tat shop selling local tchotchkes.
For an economical way to reach the Dead Sea, try and take a shared day tour with a driver, from one of Amman’s backpackers. That tour will take in Bethany beyond the Jordan, the Dead Sea, Madaba and then back to Amman. However from Madaba you will need to take a taxi down hill to the Dead Sea, and another one back. Unfortunately Jordan has yet to be blessed with a decent public transport system. And the Madaba -Dead Sea route is another missing link in their public transport service.

Amman or Madaba could be a good base for day trip at the Dead Sea.
By taxi or by public transports.
