Hi! I'm a university student looking to travel within Jordan - I have relatives in Sweden who recently vacationed there and loved it. I'm very curious about the Bedouin camps, particularly within the Ma'an governorate and Wadi Rum. Some things I'm wondering are:

  • Why do you think it's important to experience one?
  • Where would you say has the best/most authentic Bedouin camps?
  • What does a typical stay at a camp consist of?

Any info at all is greatly appreciated!!

Don't know i can give too much insight into this as I only visited a camp as part of a small group tour (about 10 of us) in Wadi Rum. The actual time spent in the camp was only in the evening after spending the day exploring various sights. The people were extremely friendly and told us about their history and their lives, cooked us an amazing meal buried in the sand, and then tried to teach us a song later in the evening (with hilariously embarrassing results). Then it was to bed - as it was a beautiful night we just slept under the stars.

The actual camp itself was just the "tent" and makeshift toilet out the back.

I don't know if that is "authentic" enough or whether its completely fabricated for tourists but we enjoyed ourselves. Hope that is of some help.

Visited plenty of camps and camped out myself dozens of times in Wadi Rum.
It all depends what YOU are looking for in your experience.

Hi Henkbos

Do you remember any operators whom you stayed with? How long back did you go and what were the approximate costs back then? I'm collecting quotes from various agencies for my trip in early June and would like to get a fair estimate to compare the charges against.

I am still to decide whether to stay in basic tent around the campfire, or just go all out and stay out in the open under the stars. In either case, I'd like to do a jeep drive tour around Wadi Rum before the night stay.

Thanks! Appreciate your help.

Stayed with several of them, but most of the time I camp by myself or with friends outside the camps.
Count on JD25-50 per night depending on facilities.

Most jeep tours do the standard round trip along the main sites in Rum.
