Hi, just curious if any of you have arrived at the Amman airport and then gone directly to Petra. What transportation did you use? If you rented a car, was the road well marked in English from the Amman Airport to Petra? I don't mind paying a tour company or service if I have to, but have considered just renting a car and driving the 220 kilometers. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Regards,

Taxi is 80 JD. Renting a car is much cheaper - all Amman rental agencies will meet you at the airport. If you rent for one day and pay for a one-way drop off at Petra, it will still be less than 80 JD - probably nearer 50 JD in total. Whereas you can, of course, rent a car for the whole duration of your stay in Jordan. Talk to http://www.rentareliablecar.com - reckon on 25-30 JD/day.

My husband and I - who are English speaking only - rented a car. We drove to Petra from Amman & drove all over the country with no problem. The signs are marked in English, but make sure you have good directions before you take off. We stopped in a small town along the way & even ran into a traffic jam with a large herd of sheep crossing the road. you may run into an occasional security check point, but they aren't looking for tourists. I would do it again for sure. Have fun!

A taxi booked through the Miriam Hotel in Madaba (don't have to be staying there) is 56 jd if you take the King's Highway. It includes an hour at Karak, definitely worth the stop. The driver was great, the taxi comfortable, and being able to watch the scenery instead of the road was great. Also, if you're driving yourself, you'll almost certainly find yourself taking the faster, but much more boring, Desert Highway.

We were also able to arrange for a return taxi at the same price. It will be a cab bringing someone from the airport or Madaba. Otherwise it's 80 jd.

I doubt very much if a taxi along the Kings' Highway still costs 56JD. All prices in Jordan have increased enormously in the last two years, and I would have expected a taxi on that road today to be more like 60-80JD. Most certainly it would not be cheaper than a taxi from the airport along the Desert Highway, which Ruffgyder has posted as 80JD
