Hi to all.
We (2 people) will travel to Jordan next April 2008. We're looking for accomodations that differ from standard new "international hotels" all cement or like that. We are looking for "old style accomodation" or "heritage" or "charme accomodation". We have no informations about Jordan: to understand better what we are looking for, if you know similar accomodation in Tunisia you can find "fonduk" or in Morocco "riad". This type of accomodation are old houses perfetly restored, very clean, with deep arab athmosphere. Normally (in Tunisia or Morocco) this type of accomodation run in a range from 40 to 90 euros for the double room/night with breakfast ....
Probably we will go in Amman, Petra, Aquba, Wadi Rum ... we don't really know now.
Thank you for your help for names, links or like that.

You have to realise that Jordan is a comparatively "new" country. Prior to 1930 or so, there were a few scattered villages interspersed with Bedouin tents and a very very few towns like Salt with Ottoman houses.

In other words, there is no real hotel tradition, and 90 pct or even more of the hotels have been built within the last 20 years.

To counterbalance this, you do have many family run hotels, where guests are considered almost as part of the family. Obviously these tend to be the smaller hotels like the Black Iris in Madaba. I don't know Amman well enough to say if there is something really like this, but I suspect not, consider staying in Madaba instead! Petra (Wadi Mousa) is very touristic as far as hotels are concerned, and this family tradition just doesn't exist there - tourists were already complaining about it in 1860 if that cheers you up!

And of course there are no hotels at all in Wadi Rum....

In Petra you have Taybet Zaman - its built in the old Arabic village style
and is excellent.

In Azraq you have the Conservation of nature Hunting Lodges with a
touch of the Lawrence of Arabia nostalgia.

The Movenpick at the Dead Sea is a wonderful re-creation of old style
a bit like the flintstones type of design . . But its really great - most
people love it.

Jordan was a country of Bedouin so not much in the way of old houses
like you mentioned in Morocco etc.

We stayed at Cleopetra last month when we were at Wadi Musa (Petra).
It is family run...not 'flash', but definitely friendly and clean, with a great outlook down to the Siq.
Mosleh, (the young fellow who manages it,) looked after us very well.

At Madaba, we stayed at the Mariam. "Middle-of-the-range", and clean.

Overall, Jordanians were very hospitable.
Good luck in your searching, and the adventure that awaits you there.

Cheers,

Dear cocitaly

I am glad you are travelling through jordan, it is a fantastic country. As mentioned above there is very little 'heritage' accomodation. However one experienced that is definately more interesting than staying in cement hotels is to stay out in the desert in Wadi Rum in a traditional Bedouin tent, and experience a totally different way of living. There is usually food included. Many of the camps are run by brothers or cousins, as Wadi Rum is basically one tribe, however one guide that I reccommend would be Wadi Rum Adventures-lots of fun. Hope you enjoy your time in Jordan.
