Hi,

Would love to make another quick dash to Umm Quais. Last time I was there in 2011, I had to go through a few military road checks, which wasn't a problem at all. Does anyone know if it is still easy to get there in a rental car or are there any restrictions in place because of the proximity to the Israel and Syrian border and the recent fighting there?

Does anyone have an email or web address for that lovely B&B place near Pella? Last time I was there they wanted to setup an internet presence. Also, would appreciate any recommendation for acommondation closer to Umm Quais.

Thanks,
Rumtreiber

I travelled to Umm Qais in October 2012 and January 2013 with a rental car & no probs. Access to the historic sight is without any restrictions or checkpoints; if you want to go a little further along the hill to catch an even nicer view of the lake, you will pass a checkpoint and might be asked for explanations (was drama free here); if you want to go down to the Jordan Valley you will pass two checkpoints, one just after Umm Qais and another one in the valley next to the canal. Since Um Q

Access to Umm Qais should not be influenced by the violence in nearby Syria. Umm Qais is well west of the Alpha and Bravo ceasefire lines.

I am a regular volunteer with the University of Sydney’s Pella Project – see http://sydney.edu.au/arts/sophi/neaf/excavations/index.shtml. I am not sure of ‘the lovely B&B place near Pella’ since I stay at the Dig House. If nobody else here has any ideas, you could contact the Volunteer Co-ordinator
Pella Volunteers, NEAF, at the University of Sydney email: neaf.archaeology@sydney.edu.au or
The Visit Jordan webpage at http://uk.visitjordan.com/ may also be able to help.

I was there two weeks ago and there were no problems whatsoever. Indeed it was close to closing time so the guide let me when he probably ought not to have. Great for photos later in the day with the sun setting. Enjoy your time.
