I have a few hours layover in Amman and wondering whether I could use them to see something, rather than stay in the airport. I land in Amman at 4am and my onward flight is at 12:30pm. Assuming that they allow me to get out of the airport (no idea how transit visas work there) and assuming again it takes about 45-60mins to get to the center of the city, I should be able to spend there about 4-5 hours: roughly from 5:30am to 10:30am. So, if this is possible, is there anyone who can recommend a couple of places to visit? Some souqs? A mosque? Is there something like a "historical part of the city"? Some museum worth of an hour or so? I know I get there early, but seeing a city that time it wakes up is somewhat better than reading the newspapers in some airport lounge (and yes, I've had layover in Amman airport before and it's not the most exciting airport in the world).

Also, what options of transport to/from the airport in those early hours?

Any info is very much appreciated.

Nothing much moving at 5.30 in Amman !

Might be a good idea to negotiate with a taxi - 5 hours work
and get him to take you to various sights - perhaps dawn over the Dead Sea
would be nice - Nebo - Amman downtown whilst its quiet - have breakfast
and a visit to the Roman Ampitheatre / Jebel Qala and then head back to
the airport

Or you could go to the Citadel - which has a rather interesting museum on a small scale - would be a spot to go for later on in the morning. I think it opened at 9. You will also be able to see the Amphitheater from there - although that was closed while we were there so we could not go down into it. Go to the gold souks. So many choices!!! They are all confined in one area - which will give you a good idea of the hustle and bustle of this city in the old part.

I think number is on the right track but perhaps go further afield. Jerash is the other side of Amman from the airport but you could probably get a few hours in - it is stunning and if Jordan didn't have Petra it would be the reason people came.

Airport buses - around 2JD and taxis around 15/18 JD
depending which part of Amman.
