PLEASE DON'T SHOUT!

October 6/7 is indeed holiday period. It is during the Succot holiday, when everything will be very crowded, accommodation will be hard to find (probably impossible at this late date) and if you do find anything it will be expensive. You can't just turn up and expect to find a place to stay. "Cheap" is of course relative, and frankly "cheap", "Succot" and "Jerusalem" don't belong in the same sentence. Probably somewhere in east (Arab) Jerusalem would be cheaper.

You don't say which border crossing you have in mind. Since October 6 is a Saturday, and no public transport runs on Saturdays (until after dark) in Israel, the most practical crossing is the Allenby (King Hussein) Bridge, from which you can take an Arab bus or shared taxi to Jerusalem (they run regardless of the Jewish Sabbath). While there are often long delays at this crossing, at least you won't be stuck there without transport to Jerusalem, which would be the case from Aqaba/Eilat or Sheikh Hussein (near Beit She'an).

If you arrive on October 7, note that this is the eve of the last day of Succot, and public transport (in Israel, not the West Bank) will stop running in mid-afternoon. This is something to bear in mind if you are planning on entering Israel at either of the other two crossing points. The last bus from Eilat to Jerusalem on October 7 will be at 1 p.m. and should definitely be booked in advance.

The opening times for the Allenby Bridge crossing are Sunday to Thursday – 08:00 – 24:00; Friday and Saturday – 08:00 – 15:00.
