Hi everyone,
I'm going to be in Jerusalem for four days, and am hoping to book a relatively inexpensive hostel or hotel in West Jerusalem, as close to the old city as possible. I'm not looking for luxury, but just cleanliness, friendly staff, a sense of safety, and some character. I'm interested in meeting other travelers too, but will be wanting quiet in the evenings. Laundry facilities and internet access would be a bonus. Does anyone know of places that fulfill most or all of these?

Also, I've been considering staying at the Beth Shmuel hostel. Has anyone stayed there? What did you think?

Thanks so much!
D.

I stayed at the "Jerusalem Hostel" a few years ago. Good service, clean and cheap. It located a few blocks from the Old City and they have 2 computers with Internet. They have this web page:

I'm going to Jerusalem again in one month, but I'm going to stay in the "Little house in the Colony", just to try another place: http://www.o-niv.com/melonit/

Good Luck!
Pamela.

Citadel Youth Hostel was very nice. It's situated in the old city, and you can see most of the sights (i.e Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Western Wall, Tomb of the Rock ...) from the roof. It has free internet (10 mts. if some other guest is waiting) and a friendly manager.

I stayed 8 nights at 'Hebron Hostel'. It's within the Old City and really well located. It's in the Muslim Quarter, a short walk to Damascus and Jaffa Gates.

I found it in the Lonely Planet Middle East guide and originally chose it as one of the cheaper options (100NIS per night in a private room/shared bathroom -Dec last year). To my surprise it was super nice, clean, the people working there are really friendly and knowing all that I would've paid a lot more than what they were asking.

As an alternative, I also stayed one night at the 'Kaplan Hotel' in the New City. It too is a really short walk to the Old City and right amongst the restaurants and cafes of the New City. It was around $60-65USD but had the feel of a hotel about it (rather than a hostel). Nice spacious rooms and free internet too.

Hope that helps.

If you are Jewish, avoid the Citadel Hostel. The owner is an Armenian gentleman with strong Palestinian ties. While this is fine, the fellow made my wifes life difficult when he found we were Jewish. On challenging him on an issue he lied about a witnessed event. There are nicer places to stay, including some Arab quarter guesthouses.
