CAN YOU ENTER ISRAEL OPEN JAWS WITH TRANSPORTATION OUT OF EGYPT?
I have an open jaws ticket LAX-->Tel Aviv then returning Cairo-->LAX. I have read posts where people take an Egged bus to Eilat, walk over the border from Eilat to Taba, and take an Egyptian bus Taba-->Cairo.

The Israel consulate tells me that I may not enter Israel without air or bus transportation out of Israel, but the busses do not go out of Eilat to Cairo; you have to walk over the border. Are they lying to me, or do people who walk over the border then come back to Israel and fly back out of Israel?

The Israeli consulate only wants to know that you will be leaving Israel. This means either by air or by bus. You could be riding out on the back of an elephant, for all they care, as long as you are not planning to stay without an appropriate visa.

There is no bus that literally drives across any border from Israel with the passengers sitting inside during the process. If you go by public transport via Taba or either of the Jordan River crossings, you take one bus to the border, get out, walk across, and get on another bus. If you have a return ticket from Cairo, you are obviously on your way to Cairo.

Don't worry. Thousands do this all the time.

I realise that perhaps in my somewhat longwinded explanation I didn't state the obvious. This is what the consular people mean by "leaving by bus". If you do what I described, which is what you want to do anyway, you are of course taking bus transportation out of Israel . Simple really!

I have been to israel 8 times including crossing borders via air from the US and from the UK, crossing in Jordan (you drive to one side then get a car or bus on the other) and I have also flown back and forth to Cairo. Plus half a dozen trips in the West bank (All in all at least 12 times over borders or more.) and I have never once been asked for any proof or even confirmation that I am leaving. I am occasionally asked how long I plan to stay in Israel but that's it. So I can't imagine how they would ask you to show then anything at all to this effect. What you are doing is entirely common as Shuffaluff says, and if you fly from LAX you will be hassled much less than if you are flying from anywhere else (except maybe nyc)
