I've not been, but I find trip advisor to be a pretty good guide. You can see average prices, and people's reviews. GL!

Shalom, I actually live right outside of Tiberias and it's an easy city to become familiar with when you live so close by. Tiberias has always had a problem with providing affordable lodging except when we had a branch of the Youth Hostel association right at the city center. For some reason that went by the wayside back in 2004. There are still a couple of places that market themselves as hostels but I have yet to hear a good thing about any of them. Your next option is a hotel and that is going to depend on two important things- your maximum per day to spend and if you'll have a car. If you have a car I would recommend one of the kibbutzim around the Sea of Galilee. During the high season for two people you'll pay $186 a night and that will include breakfast. Alternatively during the off season the same rooms can be had for less than fifty dollars. If I may ask how did you come about settling on spending time in Tiberias? Answering that might lead to some other possibilities and please do include how you will travel.

I agree that Tiberias is not the best place to stay - heading straight around the Sea of Galilee is a better option. But if you find yourself needing a bed in Tiberias stay at Tiberias Hostel on Rabin Square. It's really central and an easy walk to the bus station. It's 75NIS for a dorm or 250NIS for a single room. It used to be a hotel but now it's quite a popular hostel. Clean and very laid back. They also rent bikes for 60NIS per day.

"or just show up and ask around." thanks a good plan if you don't mind sleeping on a bench.

i disagree with #5. i traveled over 2 years around-the-world, and only made reservations, I'd say, about 4 to 5 times. i never ever ever slept on a bench. never. i always found a room, and a fairly cheap one at that. the only time i made reservations were in expensive cities, and i wanted to ensure that i got a bed in a cheaper hostel or guesthouse. i have found that letting the wind blow me where it may, rarely making reservations, and just going with the flow has served me better than planning out my entire trip in advance. so sorry, #5, but i strongly disagree with your post.
