I've got the websites for the HI and Independent hostel organisations but I was hoping I might get some tips here on the Thorn Tree for some other cool places to sleep.
Maybe there are Kibbutz that allow travellers to sleep over?
Thanks

Where do you want to stay?
There are kibbutz guesthouses and also hostels - but it depends where you are wanting to stay?

Hi james
You can try [www.couchsurfing.com]
you will find there people who will host you in their home anywhere in the world and maybe show you around or just meet for a cup of coffee.
That way you can meet someone local, have a free bed and have a boost to your enjoyment.
Hope this helps
Enjoy israel!

Anywhere that allows wanderers to come and stay a night or two which can be considered slightly alternative? I often find out where I might stay and then plan where to go from there....
I shall be wandering around the North for most of the time but will eventually depart via the Taba crossing so would like to stay a few nights in the desert.
I wish to travel relatively widely across the North, from Tel Aviv to the Golan area, most likely via Haifa and Nazareth but if there are any places to stay in wild places then I would like to locate them.
I have been to Mitzpe Ramon and want to stay in the area of the crater for at least one night.
Thanks Yoni - I have joined CS too but will mix that up with paid nights. CS is not guaranteed like a business offering a bed after all!
You can't just turn up in a kibbutz and spread out your sleeping bag, if that's what you're asking. Kibbutz guest houses are on the level of three- or four-star hotels and priced accordingly.
I think it's useful to tell you that "sleeping over a kibbutz" means a kibbutz guest house, which is a nice hotel. Sure, nothing wrong with nice hotels, if that's what you're looking for. But if you're expecting pioneering with everyone welcome to come and sleep by the campfire, I'm afraid you're about 40 years too late.

I really don't know how you've read all that into what I've asked but feel free and allow yourself continue to imagine. : )

Hey again
I like your way of traveling. I am not sure for how long you plan to be in israel but there are opportunities of volunteering in kibutsim in exchange for room and board. The problem is that usually it is for longer terms than a few days but if you try you may be able to find a place for a week or so if it suits your plans.
This is an example of a kibuts in the Arava (south east israel - on the way to eilat) - [http://www.kibbutzlotan.com/community/volunteers.htm]
This is a very alternative kibuts that specialize in ways to live in a desert.Just visiting there can be an interesting experience. I saw on their page that they require at least 3 months but they have a link for volunteering in other places and it won't hurt calling them anyway.
Another very alternative kibuts is Neot-Smadar which is also in the deep south and is probably the most alternative kibuts in israel. Also worth a visit and maybe you can volunteer for a shorter period. Their website is under construction so not relevant at the moment.
Besides that - if you are camping out, there are loads of very nice places and in the south you can do it almost anywhere. If that is what you have in mind you can PM me and i can recommend lots of nice places all over israel (I do it a lot).
I'll try thinking of other options
Hope this is enough to start you going for now

Hi Yoni. I would like to stay at a Kibbutz and learn something new while I'm doing it but I think I'm too old. Sadly, and quite ridiculously, 26 is the age limit according to that website.
Thanks for the help, I may well contact you about the camping options soon.
