Im leaving for Iran on monday. I want to look out for antigue swords and long knifes. How are the rules regarding that. Can I carry these items in my backpack? I guess I cant. What about sending them as a parcel home.
Im a bit carefull as I got an antigue tibetan sword confiscated last year at the trainstation in Lhasa.
I do have a weapon permission at home and can send the relevant paper with parcels.

carrying sharp things onto planes anywhere these days in NOT ALLOWED.Forget it.Even nail scissors or chopsticks are OUT, forbidden.

I know people who carried swords out of turkey and nepal in the main baggage section. NOT carry on. With no problem.
The safety issue is declined in main baggage greatly. Call the airport if you are still worried and ask for the security desk.
Posting it from Iran may work via courier so long as you have plenty of reciepts in english and Farsi saying how much, where you bought it, from who, and stating beyond all doubt it is not an antique!
The reason why your Sword in Lhasa got confiscated is because it is a weapon... Even if it is in your backpack you can still take it out and go on a rampage on the train.
Take a look at the idiot with the hunting knife in canada who beheaded a poor guy in the bus. Soon we won't be able to carry penknives.
In fact in some parts of SEA you cannot even carry your swiss army knife overland. Only thanks to bribing guards and inferior security can you do it. Keep that in mind too.

If you want buy good knifes(maybe swords too) go to Zanjan! This town is famous for its knifes. It's between Tabriz and Teheran.
