Has anybody recently extended his visa in Tehran. Is it really the nightmare as described in the LP or have things improved? I especially wonder how long it takes, don't mind waiting for a couple of hours in offices but hope that a "same day" extension is possible.
I'll only have three more days on my visa after this weekend (Thursday/Friday) and want to extend in Tehran as I will be there to finalize onward visas.
Thanks for any feedback...

That's not a nightmare... It's straightforward.
Should they see your visa is running out, they will do their best to extend your visa in time.

Forgot to say, Tehran visa extension office address is changed to :
Sepah Sq., Pol-e-Choobi, Enghelab Ave.

Ive done it twice here in Tehran recently.. its not a nightmare but not something you would do for fun.. it takes a lot of time and patiance.. and about 11 thousand toman. Im personally not trying to try my luck for the third time and going to Yazd for my next extention.
And yes the new place is just 200 meters south of Sepah square on the right side of the street of you come from there.
ahh seems like its too late anyway.. but please report back if you can.

Actually we had a lot of fun going for this visa extension in Tehran.
The only guy who could speak english (called "Ali") was really nice and if you learn a bit about football before showing up there, you're definitely going to make his day.
It took us about 45 min to get everything sorted from the time we enter the place (the address is definitely 200m south of Sepah sq.), namely get a form (2500 rials for the copies), pay 100'000 rials at the Bank next door (or almost next door) come back and hand in the file with 2 passeport pictures and a copy of the visa/first page of the passeport.
Well, actually we had to go back there the next morning to pick up our passeports because they had a power breakdown ans could not terminate the procedure for some reason, but this should not happen to everyone.
We got 37 days of extension (don't ask me why.. a friend went the next day and had something like 42 days).
So maybe give it a try. The information in the 2004 edition of the LP are definitely wrong.
Otherwise, keep trying in Esfahan. We went there as well and even though they did not accept to extend our visa because there were still more than 7 days on it, they seemed to be helpful and goodwilling.
I hope this might help someone later.
Visa extension in tehran was easy in 2008 oktober.
but bad news, they moved again. Now it is nearby Shariaty streat, at police street. there everyone knows the place.
bad news is, now the extension is 20 dollar, plus 2 dollar for the foto, and 2.500 real the form.
good news, if you ask them, they will do it the same day (1-2 hours), 30 day extension.

Hello,
do you think its good idea to extend my visa now after entering Iran only 10 days ago?
or is it too soon? I want to apply for transit visa through Pakistan, but before doing so I
thought maybe I could first extend my Iran visa so I would know what dates to ask for
transit Pakistan visa.
I travel by bicycle so I know I would like to spend more than 30 days in IRan,
do you have to write down in application form how many days you want to extend it?
thanks

Got visa extension in Tehran. Place HAS changed from 5th Edition LP. Entrance is on Sorush Street. If heading north along Shariati Street, turn right into Hamid Alley and you'll see it. Get frisked by a young military service office & get the paperwork just on the right as you go through the door to the main building. Let them know, nicely, you want your visa extension done and passport back as quick as possible. Get a little slip of paper that has the information in farsi for Bank Melli to make your 200,000rials deposit. For Bank Melli, its just a stroll up Hamid Alley and on the other side of the road. Come back to the Visa Office, enter the room on the first floor next to where you picked up the paperwork and hand in your docs. We waited 45 minutes before we were back out on the street, passports in hand & visa extension.

Beware: the Lonely Planet is as accurate as it is inaccurate. I went to the office and 3 groups of a total of 6 tourists were there bitching about how the LP was full of shit, and they didn't have to leave their passport of anything....
well... I did... so I'm stuck in Tehran for a week waiting around for my passport back. So its hit and miss I think.
