Hi everybody,

Judging from lots of useful information I found in previous threads this is the right place to ask questions about Iran. In 2 weeks or so we'll be heading there with my wife. I have couple of questions and I hope somebody knows the answers:
(1) When exactly does ramazan begin this year - Sep 1 or Sep 2 ?
(2) Is it bearable to stay in the desert during the day? I know that during the night it's quite bearable but I'm rather sceptic about going around during the day. I was thinking of going perhaps to Garmeh or/and around Kerman. Any specific experience with these two areas in summer heat ?
(3) Is the first week of ramazan thought to be high pilgrimage season in Masshad? (we would probably be there during the week not on Thursday or Friday)
(4) Has anybody had any experience with going to the nomads esp. in Zagros mounains in the vicinity of Shiraz ? We still need to decide whether to go for three days or so to Kordestan (on our own around Sanandaj, possibly Howraman valley) or to try perhaps to book some local agency's trip to nomads. Or would it be also easily doable on our own (dont speak Farsi unfortunately) ?

thx in advance for your answers!

I guess this forum should be both about giving and taking so I guess I can share my visa experience with you. With the Brussels embassy it was dead easy after we got the code. But getting the code was quite a nervous and long endeavour. We chose iranianvisa.com which didn't prove to be particularly good choice. Their website looks great but their service much less so. On their website they promise the code to be delivered in 7-10 working days. You wish. It took almost 4w (after the payment). But that's not the main problem. Hamid (guy behind iranianisa.com) seems to have a bit of a communication problem: it took ages before he managed to answer and usually after his answer I knew just as much as I had known before asking him. In one of previous threads he claims he always answers in 24hrs unless the time difference is involved. I seriously doubt that even he himself believes what he wrote there. I certainly don't. Anyway, after sending a threatening e-mail he finally gave me some kind of a decent answer and in couple of days code was sent. I don't think my threats worked; most probably we just had pure luck. So, if you have plenty of time & patience iranianvisa.com might be just fine for you. I certainly wouldn't use them again. It's not about not keeping up to website promises it's simply about being left in complete darkness throughout the process. Well, at least we have the visa in our pockets now.

Cheers, Bostjan

2) http://www.climate-charts.com/Countries/Iran.html click on the cities links close to where you will be staying and look up the maximum temp.

4) I have done a day tour of a sassanid castle and another site with Pars tours which also advertised seeing nomads, luckily I did see nomads a few times (from the car) but this was just lucky as it was nomad season. (Mind you I didn't do this tour spefically to see nomads it was just a nice surprise). So if you do a tour make sure from a company you definitely will be seeing them and hanging out with them. I think if you want to do it badly enough you will be able to, but I can't say much more than that.

  1. 2 Sep is the first of Ramazan.
  2. Both Garmeh and Kerman deserts are hot during summer, I mean the tempreture is in a range but I think then it will be bearable. Garmeh is located in the national park of desert while in Kerman desert you have the opportunity of visiting Kalut.
  3. No Mashad will not be crowded.

#4. it is better to visit the nomads living near Shiraz. Some agencies in Shiraz has tours to visit the nomads. Kordestan is very beautiful and hospitable, you will enjoy a lot to visit there but since that province is not touristy it is better to travel there with a tour guide.

1- in our calender write 2sep but maybe change to 1sep or 3sep.
2- it depended to you and your Tour operator. if you choose a good operator it is bearable...
3- no, it isn't depended to Ramadan. Mashhad is crowded all over the year and if you want to visit Imam Reza shrine i suggest you to go ther in mid night. (it is my experience)
4- I am Shirazian too. I think Nomads of Fars are fantastic and beautiful. they are Turk and I love Bakhtiari Nomad too. some of them live in Fars too.

I'd avoid the desert during the day! I was around Yazd in April and it was already unbearable from 12 until 5. Evenings are gorgeous though :-)

As regards nomads, the language problem could be a big one. Never met any around Shiraz, but those I met in Khuzestan whilst very welcoming, did not speak a word of English. If you want to talk to people, a travel agent who can arrange an interpretor/guide might be your best bet.

In response to 2) about the desert:

It can be up to 65 degrees Celcius in the desert close to Kerman (the highest temperatures on Earth have been measured in Shahdad). When going to the Shahdad desert this summer (end of July) we left there before 11 o'clock in the morning. There was a lot of wind, so it definitely was bearable. I wouldn't know what you would want to do in the desert all day anyway, the idea is pretty clear after a few hours : )

At night it gets quite cold, but more importantly, people warned us more than once for staying alone in the desert at night. The place may be frequented by bandits and drug smugglers and tourist have been staying overnight only with protection of the army, or so we've been told.
