thank you all for being so helpful. we were thinking of using the kapikoy crossing, about 100 km east of Van, turkey. though it looks pretty remote. we'll try and exchange lira into dolla here in Van.

has anyone by chance tried getting a Uzbekistan visa in tehran have you?

all the best

If Iranian Rial has very low value in Turkey, that means it's cheap to BUY Iranian Rial. OP wants to buy Iranian Rial, not sell.

OP, before you exchange your liras to dollars I'd check the rial course too and compare which is better.

I did not mean Iranian Rial is cheap to buy In Turkey. I mean market value is low i.e. change offices buying with low rate and selling with high rate. Generally they charge 2 percent commission rate, but in Iran Rial case in Turkey commission rate goes up 4 - 5 percent. Same thing occurs in opposite way in Iran market for Turkish Lira.
