I am incredibly interested in th culture and history of Iran and its people and was hoping to visit the country later this year. Only problem.... I am American.

Therefore, I am interested in a tailor-made tour of Iran. I'd like to have travelled alone, but as I understand it, as a US national, the only way I can visit Iran is if I have a guide accompany me. I have already written up my itinerary (where I am staying, what I will see, how I will get there), but I was wondering if anyone would be able to connect me with someone who can accompany me around the country so as to meet the government's rule that American nationals have guides with them? As I am trying to keep my costs down, I wouldn't need this person to be a full blown tour guide (so they wouldn't have to give me tours or provide me with information on different sites or anything). I would just essentially want them accompany me throughout my travels in Iran because I can't otherwise visit Iran as an independent traveller. I am doing this because as a tourist, I prefer to have the flexibility and sense of adventure of travelling without formal tours, and given the restraints of being an American, this is the closest way to that that I can travel in Iran.

If any of you know tour guides or are tour guides who would be willing to accompany me under these conditions please let me know. I also need to get a visa, so if this guide is licensed to guide Americans or knows of any other way to get a visa for Iran for US tourist, please let me know. Thanks!

Contact this man. He's guides / accompanies people through Iran on US passports and has experience doing so.

I know there are a few other guides too - search the board, the question has been asked before.

Good luck!

Hi.
I am not sure if the 'private tour guide' option still applies! And remember, I heard from a friend 2 years ago that the travel agency will charge you $150 a day for the guide -- plus all food, transport, lodging costs for him or her! Bye.

Hi,

I'm in the same boat as you - US citizen with a Persian fascination for years. I am not a tour group traveller, but I had to bite the bullet for Iran. I did a fair bit of research on tour groups and went with Pars Tour Group out of Shiraz (key2persia.com) because they offer an "Iran lifestyle" type of tour. We stay at budget or mid-range places and travel on public transportation. There is time to wonder off on your own and a few free days. The timing worked for me because a tour was planned about when I'm looking to go. I don't know how many people are in the tour, but I got quotes for a tour guide for just me and it was too steep for my budget.

Hope that helps.

Hi Geojess,

Which tour did you take with Pars Tours? Would you recommend it? During free time can you just go wherever you want or is it like supervised wandering?

My wife and I went on a 13 day tour of Iran, that was greatly managed and run. It was organized by Orient Explorer (mozaffar@orientexplorer.net) and guided by Mana Mazaheri (mana.mazaheri@yahoo.com).
Orient Explorer put together a wonderful tour, and Miss Mazaheri, a tour guide of 10 years experience, made everything work.
She is knowledgable, resourceful, charming, and has excellent English. She has extensive experience in doing tours of 1, 2, and 4 people, in addition to the larger tours. We highly recommend her.

Apropo getting the visas. Orient Explorer got all 24 of us visas. Iran had flagged 4 of us for more info, including my wife, a medical editor. They helped us explain that she wasn't a journalist in any respect, and we all got the visas.

We were a totally American group - hence, the strict requirement for the guides, and the scrutiny of our backgrounds. The total cost for the trip was US$125/person/day, including museum admissions, etc., but not including lunch and dinner. The total would have been higher if the American sponsors of our trip had taken more than nominal costs for putting it together.

I am reasonably sure that Orient Explorer is based in Tehran. I know that Mana Mazaheri lives in Tehran.
