Hi,

After years of thinking about it I will be going to Iran next week for a two week holiday. I will arrive in Tehran on saturday afternoon on the 19th of December and leave Tehran on the 3rd of January at 3 AM.

I was wondering if you have any advice on the following itinerary. I have searched the forum but would just like to hear any advice or tips you could give.

19-21: Tehran.
21-22: Kashan.
22-24: Yazd.
24-25: Fahraj.
25-27: Shiraz.
28-1: Ishafan.
1-2: Tehran

As far as I can see this packs most of the classic places to visit in Iran. Tehran might seem a bit much but when I arrive I only have sunday 21 december as a full day. I would like to see Golestan Palace, but it's not open on Sunday, so I would visit that on saturday the 2nd of January.

My main interests are Persepolis and Ishafan, though I would also spend a night in the desert or a village/oasis next to it. Do you think Fahraj is a good choice for this?

Any advice or alterations you could give would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Dear bartj
it is a good itinerary and Fahraj is good choice but Mesr Desert is more beautiful and memorable. to visit that desert you can change the itinerary as below:
Tehran- Isfahan-Shiraz-Yazd- Mesr Desert- Abyaneh and Kashan- Tehran

Hey,

I will be travelling in Iran in May For 2 weeks and I have done a bit of research and I really liked the look of your Itinerary!
If you don't mind, I would love to hear how successful it was and if it would be a recommended that itinerary to a lone shoestring traveller.

Thanks,

Alex

Hey Alex,

It was actually a very easy going trip. It is very easy to travel in Iran, transport is very well arranged. In the end, this was my trip:

2 nights Tehran
1 night Kashan
1 night Maranjab Desert
2 nights Yazd
3 nights Shiraz (one day in Persepolis, Necropolis and Pasargadae)
3 nights Esfahan
2 nights Tehran,

I spent time in both the south (first few days) and the north of Tehran. If you can I would really recommend you to stay in the North, thats the nicest part of Tehran. I liked Kashan, a small desert sort of town, and I thought Yazd was pretty much the same. Shiraz was nice, with some nice sights and I really liked Persepolis etc. I did not want to go on a group tour, so I went on a private tour with a car for the day (80US) and a soso guide (40US). So 120 US dollar in total, but the cost is the same whether you are alone or with 2 more. I went with a couple so we only spent 40 us dollar per person.

After that I went to Esfahan, which I think is the nicest places Ive seen in Iran.

All in all a good trip, but if you can, I would recommend to see some of the nature as well, its beautiful and some of these cities can get a bit old. If I would go back I would into the wild more.

People are extremely friendly and hospitable, and the place is cheap too. I took 1200 euro with me for 15 days, but in the end I only spent 800 in total. So thats a fair price. And a tip, if you fly out of Tehran, you can get a bus from a place like esfahan directly to the Tehran airport, then you dont need to spent a day at the end of your trip.
Transport between cities is extremely easy and nice by the way, good busses, good roads and cheap prices. If you have any specific questions let me know.

Thanks for that information It is really helpful. I was a bit worried about how much money to take, transport and had no idea how much time to allocate to each place but now I am feeling like I have more of a plan Which (because the transport is easy to book) can stay open to changes if I feel spontaneous! On that note... How spontaneous can you be as far as itinerary goes? I have read that when you arrive for your VOA they expect to see hotel booking confirmations for your trip? or just first night? Do you need to book places to stay much in advance?

Also, thanks for bringing to my attention the nature factor. This is a mistake that I am always telling people not to make when they travel and here I am making it! I will definitely be adding to my itinerary somewhere that I can see some of the natural beauty of the county and see some life outside the cities. A thought I am already very excited about!

Hello!

So, here I am with an Edit to my comment.
So, your question includes suggestion of desert place close to Persepolis or Isfahan. I did more quality search, and I got to know that Farhraj is a nice place. It is a desert village actually, as a place close to Persepolis.
As for a place close to Isfahan, Varzaneh is also a nice place.

Best wishes for you Iranian trip,

Edited by Sinasina, I got to know more about Fahraj
