Hi there,

I Want to buy a flight to Iran but am being told I need to show an onward ticket at immigration in Tehran.

Is this true? I want to go into Turkey by land and so am not planning on having an onward ticket.

Does anyone have any experience with this? ie is it a "policy" which isn't strictly enforced? Or am I going to be sent back if I land without an onward ticket!

Help!

No-one asked me for a return ticket when I arrived at IKA a couple of months ago.
In fact I didn't have one, as i bought my ticket in Tehran, although I did have a reservation. So if it is a regulation, it isn't strictly enforced.

Info for anyone searching this thread!

Tried to board Kuwait Airlines flight last night and they wouldnt let me BOARD without an on-ward ticket.

So if anyone is thinking of buying a one-way ticket be aware that an agent might sell it to you but you may not be allowed to fly!

It is an increasingly common problem world-wide. Even trying to get on an airplane with a one-way ticket, raises security questions. (Don't you plan to return?"). Just traveling randomly (RTW) from place to place is increasingly difficult.

Read the Visa Requirements for specific countries (available on several airline, travel or government websites).

That said it may not be a problem in practice -- or, it might be. There is no way to predict how the Immigration Officer will respond. If you chose to go, have very good evidence that you have (1) adequate finances with you, and (2) a well thought out travel plan that you can present convincingly if asked.

No-one asked me for an onward ticket on my arrival at Mehrabad 3 weeks ago! I met several people who were travelling out of Iran by land so I can't see this being a problem.

You could reserve a train ticket out of Iran ahead of time for when day your visa will expire. There's info on how to do that at http://www.seat61.com/Iran.htm
