You would be a complete fool to travel without travel insurance.

Please note that it has never been compulsory to arrive with a travel insurance. Last summer I arrived at IKA and the officer at the Visa On Arrival counter asked me to go and pay 12 euro for a temporary insurance at a counter in front of him and bring him back the receipt.
With respect to the number of blank pages in your passport, my guess is that it's the same requirement as for visas of any other country: one is enough, for the sticker. They will also put an entry stamp (and an exit stamp when you leave), but you don't need a blank page for them.

frsanfi, thanks for sharing your experience. I remember reading somewhere (embassy's webpage?) that two pages were required for the tourist visa, since they want to put the stamp on the opposite side! This rule might be flexible though...

I've just checked my passport, which has 4 stickers of Iranian visas on it: they always put the entry and exit stamps on the opposite page, no matter if it was blank or already with stamps of other countries.

i just arrived to Iran 3 days ago. Now is absolutely mandatory to have a insurance, you arrive and they tell you in a bad mood to go get it, or show some proof. What i did and IT WORKED is said to the that i have a insurance (wich is not true) and then show some random card of travel assistance or whatever (without name, it was just a card) and told them to call to the Chile number to confirm, wich of course he didnt do. That is my particular experience. As the VISA, they ask you for tow blank pages. No return ticket or hotel confirmation.

Ok great, thanks. If apparently it's possible to get an insurance when there that's not too bad - at least you don't have to fly back out if you don't have one.

I wonder if anyone has experience getting the insurance at the airport? How much is it? Is that always an option?

Yes it is always an option. If i remember correctly was 15 dollars, but it depends of how many days.
