Hi,

I haven't had much luck getting in contact with the Iranian Embassy in Canberra to ask this as the several times I phoned there was no answer and they're unresponsive with emails, and they're website is pretty atrocious.. looks like some kid made it.. anyway! I was hoping someone here could help me. I was born in Iran (shiraz) in 1982 and moved with my family to Australia in 1986. I haven't been back since at all and was wondering what the situation with getting out of military service is. I am not very fit or athletic but I probably couldn't get out of it on health grounds as I'm not really out of shape. I do have an Iranian passport that my dad obtained for me in Iran, but everyone has been telling me that unless I am a full time student I am doomed. Can anyone please shed some light? Is it at all possible to buy my way out as long as it isn't too high a price? I have heard that it is for someone like me who has been abroad for so long?

Thanks very much,

Hossein

Hi, I was exactly in the same situation as you but I have been to Iran 2 times now. I live in Canada. You can buy your military service I think it is around 5-6 thousand US. If you are a full time student you can go to Iran once a year (1 time entry only) Just tell them you are a daneshjoo, they will not even ask for a student card.

If you are the only man in the household or if your dad is over 65 then you can get a military exemption, (mo'af) but that takes a few months at least.

I dont think you should have any problems going to Iran, you will love it there

I want to go back soon too.

A British-born Iranian friend of mine paid £2000 to get out of his military service. But that was because he was staying in the country. If you're just passing through on holiday, you'll be OK.

If you're an only son and your dad is over 65, the reckon the poor fella can't pop any more out, so you'll be OK too.

You can get a three-month exemption per year.

Hi Hossein

I am not sure if the 'buy out' clause is still in effect. But Massoud is indicating it is so! The exact fee, I remember very well, used to depend on, believe or or not, the college degree one had received or were about to receive, and was as high as $10,000, if I am not mistaken, for someone with PhD degree! Bye.

Massoud -- Do you know the easiest way for an Iranian-German gal in 20s who left the country when she was a little child , to obtain a 'Shenasnameh'? Thanks.Bye.

I strongly reccomend you call the Embassy in Canberra again and clarify. You may also want to ask DFAT if they can provide more advice than

"Australian/Iranian dual national males who have not completed military service may be prevented from leaving Iran" (smartraveller website)

Hi,
I am an iranian studying fulltime in the U.K but live in Dubai. I'm 24 and haven't been to Iran since the age of 3. I was intending to visit Shiraz my hometown this summer but not sure if i will get stopped at the airport for questioning or maybe even detained as i haven't served the army yet. Could anyone share some light on this please. World greatly appreciate it.

I'm an Iranian American, 30, that left Iran when I was in 2. I want to go back this summer with my American Wife. I have the passport, shenasnameh, national id card. I haven't been able to get the military exemption stamp yet, because my father's shenasnameh is in Iran, but the people in the embassy say that I can go for 3 months without the military exemption. My parents are dubious and paranoid, as people from their generation are, and think that I still need to get the military exemption done before I go. It looks like people above have gone without the military exemption, has anyone had a problem getting stuck if they didn't have it done, just going on the 3 month permission?

I too am very interested in visiting my homeland. I was born in 1987 and left Iran when I was 10.

I hold a Canadian citizenship.

I am very keen on traveling overland from turkey into Iran. Staying around a month, and making my way towards baluchestan Nd entering Pakistan. My parents are extremely paranoid and are guilt tripping me on not going. But I want to give it a try anyway. Will the 3 month military exception apply ? I am not sure about the status of my shenasnameh
