By April of next year I will be in the middle east and was thinking about potentially visiting Iran. At first, seeing as I will be in Dubai, and after hearing that Canadians cannot get a visa unless registered on a tour (I usually hate taking tours), I was going to perhaps visit Kish Island since there is no Visa requirement and it seems quite easy to get to from Dubai. I'm still unsure about whether the island is actually worth a visit or not. Then I started thinking about the possibility of going to the Iranian mainland and then flying out of Tehran towards my next destination. Is it possible to simply get a transit visa instead of having to book an expensive tour? If anyone has experience with this please let me know!

I kinda figured as much based on the latest bits of info I've been reading. Would anyone know what a reasonable tour should cost, say about 7 or 8 days in length? I ask this because I've been looking at different operators but the prices seem to wildly fluctuate. As much as I want to see Iran, tours in general are just so draining to a budget backpacker!

I'm American and visited this past May. Yes, you have to have a guide. Kish did not appeal to me. If you go, your going to want to see the top areas which most will agree are Isfahan and Shiraz/Persipolis. I also greatly enjoyed Yazd and Abeyanah. I skipped Tehran, I'm not much for museums and it is not a historic centre. Good luck.
