Hi,

I have a UK passport, is the only way to see Iran through a tour? Or is there any way of seeing the country as an independent traveller?

In theory, if you travel on a UK, Canadian or US passport you should engage a guide for the duration of a your visit, or you should join a tour that has a guide.

A number of people who have engaged a guide have reported that they enjoyed a lot of unsupervised time, visiting local markets and other sites unaccompanied, as long as they spent a certain amount of time each day in the company of the guide.

However, some controversy arose in this recent thread about travelling without a guide:

As above...legally,you should be either in a group with a guide,or 'independent' but still with a guide. This must be an officially registered guide, not just a guy you meet in the market....

The first is generally a cheaper option than hiring a guide just for you...certainly if you are travelling alone.

If you travel without a guide you are breaking the law.Which we cannot recommend on here....

The only way a UK citizen can see Iran without a tour is to have another passport which doesn't require one (e.g. I also have NZ passport).
