Next month (September) i am going to visit Iran for the first time. Please let me know if i need some vaccinations before i go there and what about hygiene there and drinking water. Thank you.

And in the books i have read they recommend bottle water.
When in september are you going to Iran? You know that it is Ramadan during Iran? Just search for Iran and ramadan to find some info about traveling during ramadan.

I have been drinking tap water most places except rural areas and Bam. Food safety is very high everywhere, even streetfood.

atheniansot, it depends where you go. Old cities will have old pipes. I never had a problem. Neither did anyone I met. But we went with bottle water mainly because of the taste.

I ate raw cucumber/tomato salads the whole time (and I never do that when I travel!) and I never got sick. Your stomach may vary.

For vaccination info see: http://www.nathnac.org/ds/c_pages/country_page_ir.htm
Tap water is fine, travelled for months, drank it everywhere, no problems.
Mecial care also seemed good although I had little direct experience of this. An English friend was taken in for a serious (pre-existing) illness and was very impressed. Another friend who's lived there for twenty years also commented on the quality of the care.

It is almost inevitable to have an upset stomach when travelling -- even if you go somewhere perfectly clean. That's because different areas of the world simply have different bacteria that you are not used to having. So, it takes a few days for the adjustment to happen.
Iran's tap water is clean, and Tehran water is better than most of the worlds! It comes straight from the melting snows of the massive mountains that surround Tehran.
Getting a rabies or typhoid vaccination is a bit over the top! Unless of course you plan to visit Iran in order to wrestle with wild bears. The traffic is far more of a danger.
