usually the response to this idea is, it isn't even worth trying. but recently i've read a few accounts of people that've done it, and i'd love to follow any leads you might have. does anyone have any ideas (hopefully besides that it isn't even worth thinking about)?

Kooki.... far too vague a question. Where from? Where to? During which season? How much time do you have?

from somewhere in europe (as near as possible to the balkans -- am now located in bulgaria) departing in late 2008 -- september, october, novemberish. aiming for the US east coast -- north carolina as final destination but if i could get to the gulf or to the northeast i wouldn't complain. have as much time as i need, really. any thoughts?

This sounds like an interesting way to travel. I would love to have the time to really travel. Good luck, Kookinout.

Yacht or freighter?

Yacht, best bet is to get over to the central or western med in around october as charter boats will be crossing the Atlantic. You should be able to get daywork on boat finishing the season but staying put if you have to hang around.

Freighter, unless someone can tell me different the only way to work a passage is to embark on a career as a seaman. Jobs are in great demand and poorly paid (global labour market). Getting the training even as an OS can be expensive and time consuming. Yachts or flying are the way to go.
