I'm leaving the US by boat in April, and not quickly returning (UK citizen). I will obviously need to check out with US customs. I can't easily phone the US Embassy from work as its about £1.20 a minute. What's the deal, do I deal direct with state customs? Or do I need to find a Port of Entry, and leave from there?

are you the captain? if you are then you really need to be better informed about your duties to the customs man. you need a clearance note. without this piece of paper you will not be allowed into any ports in the world. There was a us boat forgot to clear. didnt have the right piece of paper, couldnt land anywhere. you get 24hrs in a port before being towed out if you refuse to go.
Go to a clearance port and speak to the customs dudes. they will give you all the pamphlets etc to ensure you get it right. they will then stamp you out of the country. and you will have 24hrs to leave port and do not land in the us again without doing the full port entry procedure(yellow flag 24hrs out of port). You dont want em getting trigger happy. cheers

I suppose it would be possible to write a less informative post but it would probably take some thought.

Why would you be dealing with Customs when LEAVING a country?

Right.
#1 Why do you think I'm trying to pick up guidance BEFORE its urgent, so I am better informed. I pointed out in my OP I was trying to circumvent a long and expensive telephone call to the US Embassy in London, on the basis that someone here might have a clue, rather than a useless opinion. Please see my response to #2. I did mention Port of Entry.
#2 I have a 44lb MG Duff zinc anode, and you have given me a good idea of where it could be productively located.
#3 You need to get your immigration status knocked off the system
