Hello all,

My partner and I are from Auckland, New Zealand and are starting to get pretty excited about our travel plans. We are heading to Sth America for about a year, to teach English for about 6 months in Argentina or Peru (and my partner would love to get some camera operating work, if possible) and then have a big explore of some of the continent.

We're not too keen to jump on a long-haul flight - they're just no fun! We both love the ocean, and although we don't have much sailing experience, we're hoping that it's possible to crew on a boat to get there. We've posted our profiles on several crewing websites and put up ads down at the wharves but havn't exactly been overwhelmed with offers. Ideally, we'd like to start our journey end of April/May/ but can be flexible and we're happy to take our time getting there (maybe up to a month?).

So, my question to you good people is, have any of you ever travelled from New Zealand to Sth America via boat or know of people who have? Is it possible? Plan B is to get a flight there and try to crew on a boat on the journey home (although isn't it crazy how little difference in price there is between one-way & return airfares?).

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Post in http://www.noonsite.com/ the problem is that the particular sail you are talking about is a very long one so your target "supplier" would need to be a delivery boat or an adventurer, in which case may want to do it alone.

If you have been in a boat for over 5 days, wet fron the rain and waves, tired because you have not been able to sleep properly for 5 days and have to get up every 4 hrs to cook even if you dont want to and to take care of the boat, then yes that is the trip for you guys!

also, you will need to invest in proper gear (talking of at least £2k for both of you) if you are going to survive (hypothermia will set in on the first night offshore if not properly equipt).

Good luck!

PS, the "only" way to SA from NZ is south so at best you can expect to get to valdivia (winds and currents dictate the route), i pressume that is what you meant by sailing.

You're talking about a trip in the Roaring 40's (aka The Clipper Route). It's a notch in your belt for bravery if you do it. Best of luck if you decide to go!
