Hi everyone,

I am thinking of driving from the UK through France, Luxembourg, Germany, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and the getting a ferry to Egypt. All in about 17 days I think.

This is purely an idea at the moment and I have two basic questions to start off with:-

1. Is there anything to stop me driving? Border restrictions, etc?

2. Is there a ferry (either with car or as a foot passenger) from Turkey to Egypt?

Many thanks.

Sorry no car ferry Turkey to Egypt. Big question - What are you going to do with the car at the end. Taking a car into Turkeys the easy part - but you MUST take it out again unless you have a residents permit. The cars registered onto your passport on entrance and has to be with you on the way out again. This rule causes many a headache and sometimes a jail sentance for visitors who have not done their homework. Can't even leave it and fly home then back to collect it.

Hi,

Many thanks for your advice. It is an old car - I had planned to take it to a scrap yard and have it scrapped and then fly home....are you saying this won't be a possibility?

Not in turkey it isn't. Its one of the major problems overland travellers have - theres no way a car can be left behind unless you have time, money and someone who lives there who is prepared to do the screeds of paperwork to get clearance. The number of times I have seen departing travellers pulled out of the line at passport control and look all bewildered because they had not realised the cars on the passport. Don't ask me why - I just know thats the facts.

Thanks again for the advice, it was invaluable. I may have to rethink my plan!
