Novice crew ??

How realistic is it that someone with little sailing experiance can get a working passage on a boat from Southern California to Peru ? I'm a 32 old male, in good shape with scurba certification and all that (if it helps), good cook and easy going. I havn't had any long sails before, have spent a few weekends on a friends sail boat just going from Long Beach to Catalina - dont know much very honestly and am only entertaining the idea right now.
