Anyone have any info on this route?
Have heard rumours/stories of several people going to Chennai/Madras to try to get boats to Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore, maybe via the Andamans.
Sounds good but would like to hear if anyone knows anything more concrete.

My wife, young son and I went by ship from Madras India to Singapore in the
spring of 1980 on a combined cargo/passenger ship called the "M.V. Chidambaram".
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip in the calmest weather imagninable. But if
you're interested in repeating this journey, it is unfortunate that this ship
had a horrific fire in October 1984 that ended this service, and no other ship
has since replaced it. The Shipping Corporation of India continues to refer to such combined
ships now on their Web site - but becomes very evasive about specifics.
Currently there do appear to be some cruise ships that go between India/
Sri Lanka and various islands near India, but at a far greater price than we
paid 26 years ago!. One small cruise ship is the Spirit, operated by

There are other examples, but it appears also that many of the ports devastated
by the tsunamai two years ago have not again been listed as destinations.
A sad situation all around.
