hi there,

i'm new to this branch so this might be stupid questions to you experts.

gonna be in India in may 2007 and wanna go on to New Zealand around june/july by crewing on a private boat.
i don't really care if i end up in NZ or just anywhere "near" i.e. Indonesia, Australia, South Pacific,...

so my questions are:

1) would it be a good idea to go down to the maledives to increase my chances?
or else, where in India would be good to look for boats?

2) is it the right season for indian ocean west-east passages?

3) i only know little bout sailing but am hard working and open to learn and improve as much as possible.
plus, i'm a good chef and don't mind doing whatever helps the others on board and sharing costs
for food and stuff
is it at all possible to find a boat just with the right attitude but low level of sailing skills?

4) what else do i need? obviously i will have all visas already. do i need like a log book, health certificates
or something like this?

i know, lots of questions but you gotta start somewhere, right?
cheers

Hi

I don't have any clues except i heard that Columbo in Sri Lanka is a good place to pick up private boats.
I want to do something similar around the same time so i am watching this post with interest!

It's not the preferred direction and fewer yachts do this. The route for this is from Maldives to Sri Lanka then Singapore.
For this direction of travel the season is usually during the SW Monsoon, July to September.

Again, it's the more difficult direction you seek and high winds may be expected with difficult travel. Much fewer yachts attempt this, further limiting your chance to find a place on board. Another factor is you wish to go to NZ in June/July, the height of the South Pacific cruising season. Most yachts are LEAVING NZ and Australia at that time, or have left in May, the weather ideal for sailing INTO the South Pacific.

You may still be able to find something that fits your needs but it will be a more difficult search. Even boat deliveries are more limited in this direction of travel but that may be the best choice for you, due to the timing of your travel. Crew finders might be a good place to search for a position.
