How much does it cost to cruise?Interest forums / Life on the Ocean
I'm thinking, 40 ft Steel Slocum Sprayer, 50k with fixer-ups. How much to crusie the Bahamas or other parts for 10 years? Can it be cheap to live on a boat long term or is a hole in the ocean?
If you sail for that long, you are going to have boat problems and boat repairs are really expensive in the Bahamas. You may have to sit in anchorage for a week and wait for a part to be sent to you. The Bahamas also can be very lonely as many of the islands are tiny and have less than 100 people living on them, I'd recommend hitting the Bahamas for a month or two and then head to the Carribean where you'll find more personality and culture. There are many good anchorages in the Bahamas but many are isolated or tough anchorages. Its frustrating sailing around the Bahamas as its shallow everywhere but its extremely safe and tranqual place. I only spent two months in the bahamas but I felt like it was a good ammount of time. To dock for the night and fill up on water/electricity, you are looking at minimum $75. Plus food is pricey there (outside of Nassau)so pack as much before you leave as possible. Beer is $50 a case. Ketchup $5 for a bottle. Anything big is going to be expensive as you shipping goods to these small islands are very difficult. | 1
It costs as much as you have. | 2
