Anyone have any info on getting from Indonesia to Darwin by boat? I have no experience of sailing but willing to learn. When is the best time-I'm hoping to try for early 2007.

Hi Brenda, The trip from Indonesia to Darwin is an easy one providing you select the correct time of year. The further east you are the easier the trip, as a route due south at the correct time of year, is a beam reach under tradewind conditions. However, you cannot safely make the trip during the monsoon season which lasts certainly through March and the start of April, possibly later.
There are three race/rallies setting off from Darwin to (1) Bali, (2) Dili and (3) Saumlaki in June/July, and hitching a ride back to Darwin, or onward to Thailand or into the Indian ocean should not be too much of a problem. Do a google search for Dinah beach Cruising Yacht Association and Darwin Sailing Club and check for details.
Darwin is a wonderful location during the dry season (April to September) and it is a hub for international sailing yachts heading for Asia, South Africa and the Med.
Best wishes.
