from usa west coast; does anybody have any experience or input; when and why? thanks.

from west coast? thats more or less an entire circumnavigation that will take you at least a year and a half, most likely more, and will take you through several seasons, across the pacific, indian ocean and the atlantic.

Get the indispensable World Cruising routes by Jimmy Cornell and start planning. Its an epic, huge, wonderfully expensive trip.

Good advice - and I hope wandrr is not the owner of the boat but looking to crew. If so, then Newport RI in May and June is a good place to find yachts that will be crossing.
