I thought there were routes in both northern and southern latitudes for going west to east. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they're somewhere in the 40's or 50' range.

Great Circle Charts will give you some information. Local pilot charts will give you information on winds, seas, depths and hazards. Looks like you head east and take a hard left at Tahiti. Keep an eye out for large Samoans in big sailing canoes and feel free to ask them directions.

The only practical sail from Australia to South America directly is east in the Roaring Forties.

A very few yachts do it, but it is hard, cold, and dangerous, and I doubt they would take on inexperienced crew.

You might find a ride from Darwin to Durban and Capetown and then the same or another to Rio. Much easier and safer except around South Africa.
