As part of our year traveling we'll be spending August in Turkey. We want to start in Istanbul and rent an apartment for a week or so. What would be a good neighborhood for a family of four (kids 11 and 14) during the August heat and at the beginning of Ramadan? I think we'll want to escape back to the apartment in the afternoon for a nap and some AC so I'd like a neighborhood that has some things to see in the morning and is active but family friendly when the sun goes down (ie not too many young backpacking tourist looking for a bar).

I'm from İstanbul and I can assure that August is really hot in İstanbul so I can advice you to find an apartment with a swimming pool.I'm not sure that you can find an apartment to rent for a week but in the Bosphorus part is the best neighborhood of town and more cool in August because of the sea.A little far from the cıty center ,''Kemerburgaz '' is very elegant , ''Atakoy or Yeşilkoy '' are lovely neighborhoods of İstanbul. No matter Ramadan because nowhere is close during this month and you can find a lot of bar in the cıty especially at Bosphorus part.
Have a nice stay.

Having traveled to Istabul before and as a mother the best advice I can give is this: Buyukcekmece
It's outside of the main part of the city but only a 45 minute bus ride to see the "big sites" with easy access to the beach (you just walk 10 blocks south max and you're there). It's a little quieter for families, and I truely enjoyed it.
We found an apartment on VRBO.com near the Galata Tower for a trip to Istanbul last your - send me a message of you want more info.
It had a/c, though one night the electrciity went out and it was crazily hot for a few hours. Great location - walking disatnce to Istklal caddessi and the tram to Sultanahmet, and a decent price too. There was a supermarket nearby too.
Ramadan in Turkey is no big deal for tourists -we found plenty places to eat during the day.

You can find apartments in Balad also. It is very local and cosmopolit subburn of Istanbul. Very close to all amenties. You can also find a sea view appartment there.
If you plan to stay in a hotel with family rooms, I would recommend hotel esans in sultanahmet old city.

they offer quite competitive pricing to families I believe since it is also a family run hotel. I would sellect silent streets for hotel or appartments in old city. Fatih, Ballad or Eyup. Most preferably in Old city
