Hi! Wanted to ask some suggestions on where to go from India. We'll be living in India for 6 months (hopefully traveling some while there) and then have few weeks to see other parts (January-February). Where do you suggest going? We've never been in Asia. My kids are 9 and 6 and love animals. And we'd be traveling in a low budget.

Would love to hear what your ideas are. Thanks so much! Looking forward to a year of adventures.

I'd suggest flying to Chiang Mai or Bangkok and then working your way down the Peninsula by train (kids love trains) and fly home from Singapore. It would be a perfect journey for 6 to 8 weeks. Lots to see. Some good zoos along the way and the night safari in Singapore — plus many different places to ride elephants.

Thank you Brian. This sounds like lots of fun!
Yes! the Zoos, a night safari? Neat! And of course, I forgot we'd need to ride an elephant for sure!
Thanks for your time.

Where will you be in India? Bandipur / Mudumalai are worth a visit if you are in the south - lots and lots of elephants to see and it can be quite special if you pick a place to stay within the park.

Bangkok, Malaysia, Singapore and Bali are easily accessible from India. #1s suggestions are good though - Thailand to Singapore is very easy for a first time Asia visitor, although you will be coming from India which will make them even easier. Visit an elephant sanctuary near Chiang Mai to give the kids a special experience with the elephants. You can stay overnight and help wash and feed them.

Nepal is great too.

Other good national parks in India: Ranthambore and sariska in Rajasthan, Corbett in Uttaranchal, Bandipur and Nagarhole in Karnataka.

What about Sri Lanka? I've heard of the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka although we didn't go there. Sri Lanka has some beaches and is easy to get to.

I think they will be In Delhi? (from their other post), so the parks Ansh suggested (Ranthambore, Corbett) would be better, since they are closer.

Singapore won't be much fun on a low budget: and it will feel especially expensive after India. My son and I have travelled extensively within Asia over the last year and a bit, and if you visit my site and click the country tabs you'll get insights in what to do (there are also recommendations of things to do in each country): http://www.travelswithanineyearold.com

There are great, if ethically dubious, animal activities in Chiang Mai, where accommodation is also cheap: petting tiger cubs, watching elephants paint, elephant rides etc. etc. For the ultimate, you can do mahout training in camps around Luang Prabang in Laos.

You should probably grab some beach time on an island: there's a place called Treehouse on Koh Chang, Thailand, which gives a nice, easy island experience. Penang, in Malaysia, is great with kids, with activities from fruit farms to batik making to war museums to playgrounds, though the beaches aren't amazing.

If you're after budget, budget travel then Laos and Cambodia are both great with kids. There's a dinosaur museum where they can hold dinosaur bones in Savanakkhet; there's the bamboo train in Battambang; there's the chance to explore the Mekong around Four Thousand Islands. So just a few ideas... What's your budget, approx, for the 2 months?

I've written a lot about our family trip to South India a couple of years ago at www.travewithkidz.wordpress.com
You may pick up some good tips.

Great country, great for kids.
