Would really like to visit Vietnam next year with my three kids who will be aged 14, 13 and 4. Spent a successful month with them in Thailand three years ago - but is Vietnam a lot tougher - and more expensive for creature comforts? We would probably go for two weeks and would want to base ourselves in two or possibly three places. We would probably need two rooms rather than one. Anyone been in a similar situation in Vietnam - any advice? What about malaria?? Thanks

Vietnam is FINE. We were there a year ago with our then 8 and 11 year old. I highly recommend Handspan Tours. You can arrange the basics by email and they'll book train and flights for you for a small fee. Worth it! The hotel they booked us into in Hanoi was good too. It's not more expensive for comforts and there are lots of options for travel there. We did not take any malaria prophylactics. We were there in January and only went as far south as Hoi An and Hue. Didn't go to Sapa. Don't miss Ha Long Bay boat tour. Don't miss Al Fresco's restaurant in Hanoi...best casual western food in Asia. YUM!!! as well as Fanny's ice cream and Dakshin south India vegetarian, and Baan Thai restaurants. Okay, there are TONS of great Vietnamese restaurants too, but can't remember names...most places are fine.
We were there for 19 days. I recommend Ha Long Bay trip, Hanoi, Hue and Hoi An. Hokay, all h's!
cheers from Ruth who lives in Guangzhou China with husband and kids.

We went to Vietnam almost two years ago with our children, who then were also 8 and 11. Our children liked Vietnam even more than Thailand, with the possible exception of the beaches in Southern Thailand. Hanoi and Hoi An were our favorite cities, and we all loved the three day, two night boat trip to Halong Bay and Cat Ba Island. We arranged this through HandSpan, who did a great job. We also arranged for some train tickets through HandSpan.
We found Vietnam to be as inexpensive as, and perhaps less expensive than, Thailand.
