Vietnam and Thailand with 2 and 5 year old

Interest forums / Kids To Go

Does anyone have any experience in travelling around Vietnam and Thailand with 2 and 5 year old kids? We are planning to go there next year in February/March. Are there any specific places to go with children?

Dear Supper,
My husband and I travelled with a four year old to Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. I found that although there were not that many 'Kid' things to do they find their activities, especially if you keep an eye out for things that may interest them. In Hanoi we took my daughter to the water puppet show (a must see for the kids). We went to Sapa in the North and I am sure our guide had never had to look for frogs in the rice fields but she loved that. The Hill Tribe children also loved to have 'European' children to play with. (Take some small toys or pens for the Hill tribe kids, they love them). In Halong bay my daughter loved to jump off the boat into the water with all the other (Shall we say older children, about 30-40yo). We also found that the monks at the temple loved seeing my daughter and encouraged her to light incence etc. In Hoi An we found a hotel with a pool and this was her relaxation for the time there. We also tended to go to the same restaurant at each stop as my daughter then felt more comfortable with the people. In Siagon we booked a Delta tour which took us into Cambodia. We did the three day, I think the two day would have been enough, she enjoyed the rice poping factory and the croc farm (Not so much what we enjoyed but then it is compromise when travelling with kids). In Cambodia we went off the beaten track to see the fresh water Mekong dolphins (daughter loves animals). In Siem Reap we did the three day pass for Angkor but by lunch time stopped at the temples and took the daughter to a silk worm factory one day, a traditional dace school another and to the stone carving factory the next. In Thailand my daughter has always enjoyed the weekend market and we have spent a few days at the beach to relax for all of us. I have always found that the people love kids and spoil them rotten (which of course the kids love). As I said just keep your eyes and ears open to things the kids will love and then compromise. In Thailand you may also want to go see elephants. We have done this in Thailand and in Cambodia. Hope you have a great time.

I traveled to Thailand with my daughter, who was almost 2 at the time. She had a great time. We mainly stayed in Bangkok and Chaing Mai. She especially liked the elephant rides and feeding the elephants at the elephant park. Other things she liked - ox carts, boats, dropping coins into the bowls at the temple, playing with local kids, monkeys, the night market - dance shows, khaosan road, running around in the park. The people in Thailand love kids and she got alot of attention, which she loved. I'm sure you'll have a memorable trip.

We spent quite a while in Vietnam and Thailand with our children (4&8) last year. In Vietnam they loved the train journeys, Halong Bay, and even the visits to the normal boring adult things, like the cu chi tunnels. The mekong delta trip with our girls was the same - rice popping, coconut sweet making - and they loved it, as well as getting lots of attention!

In Thailand you're spoilt for choice - beaches, elephants, temples, monks, transport, etc etc etc

The best measure is the smiles on our girls faces throughout SE Asia - you can see it for yourself, and some of our adventures on our website
