Hi All
We are planning a 4-5 week trip going West to east coast of USA next year, possibly having 3 or 4 days around the Grand Canyon, and a ranch stay somewehre along the way. We are thinking of starting around the Vegas area, but will probably arrrive into LA from New Zealand, and want to head across the southern states to the east coast. We would appreciate any must see stops to take two boys aged 5 and 7 or great places to stay. Were were thinking of a camper RV but seems from the threads it is just as cheap to hotel andhave a car. A RV would be a waste when staying on a ranch but perhaps we could mix it up. Any ideas greatly welcomed for our adventure.

Hi Kiwiboys and family!

Will you have camping gear? The Western states are filled with National Parks, National Forests and BLM (bureau of land management) land. I'm a big fan of Utah.. Moab for some biking, Bryce Canyon or Zion for hiking.

If your kiddos are in to animals, this might be a fun stop: http://www.bestfriends.org/atthesanctuary/. It is near the North rim of the Grand Canyon. Visiting one of the Pueblos in New Mexico would be interesting, I recommend Acoma: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoma_Pueblo. Perhaps you could find a feast day or other festival that is open to the public. White Sands National Monument is another nice stop if you do end up going through NM, your kids can slide down the dunes. If you end up passing through Austin, TX, I can give you some additional recommendations. Not sure where you will fly out of but New Orleans is like nowhere else in the US.

I've lived in Utah, New Mexico and Texas, all have their charm and I'm sure you'll find plenty to keep you busy.

Should be a memorable adventure, enjoy, and best of luck with your planning!

thanks goatia, no we won't be camping, but looked at the sites you suggested and love the look of them. Our smallest is right into animals so the park would be perfect for him. also like the look of Bryce canyon. thanks for your ideas
