We are planning on doing some lower altitude treks (below 12,000 feet)-maybe Helambu and part of Annapurna) with our 2 year old this summer in Nepal, and would like to hire a porter to carry him in a dhoko(basket) so we dont have to . He's 27 pounds and after hauling him all over Mexico last summer in a backpack we want someone else to do it for us. Yes we are lazy, but we are also very fit. ANY ideas on outfitters/RELIABLE and safe Nepali businesses that cater to trekking with kids? we want someone who is used to hauling a kid, and who is very good with kids, but doesnt cost over $20 US a day (this IS Nepal). ANY ideas or experiences, company names or phone numbers ?Help!
check with the himalayan rescue service about taking an infant/toddler up into the mountains of nepal. and even if it does cost 20.00 bucks for a safe reliable porter/trekking company to carry your child who cares. it's your child. there are some great companies out there. maybe a company like peregrine treks??? have a safe trip.
Last year we two Grandmas (mid-sixties) were well cared for by our porter (Indra) and our female guide (Serena - spelling wrong, since I'm not near my journal) organized by the Three Sisters in Pokhara. (They have a web page - try 3 Sisters Adventure Trek and add Pokhara to find it; email is sisters3@cnet.wlink.com.np) The Sisters also have a sweet guest house where there were several families with young children. At one point our porter offered to carry us across a flooded section of the river (we declined and hiked the long way) but if he was willing to hoist a couple of 140 pound old ladies, he could easily manage a kid.
Say hi to Nicky and her sisters from us; they were terrific and very understanding. We found out about them from a trekker from Amsterdam, then checked out their creds on the net. Good luck. (Also, have you checked the Yetizone board, for Nepal hikers? Great advice there.)

Two years ago i did the Poon Hill trek with 2 brothers. One of them was carrying MiniMox, who was then 1 year old. The elder brother, who speaks english, is called Dharma and can be contacted through the Nirvana Hotel.

btw, MiniMox was carried in her backpack-carrier, not in a basket. i paid the guys $10,- each per day.

Some porters/guides/combined porterguides can be contacted by email. Have a look at theIndependant himalayan porters page
Have fun
