My wife and I are both 35 and love to travel and recently had twins who are now 3 months old. They are an amazing adventure right in our own home !, but now we're wondering, heh, will we ever be able to travel again. This message board has given us hope and we loved reading about all the cool stuff everyone has done with their children. We're wondering though, what's it like travelling with twins ? Any other travellers out there with twins ? What's it like ? Where did you go ? Is it any different than travelling with a single toddler / baby.
We're open to travelling anywhere and pretty much have on our own. Some thoughts we've had are caravaning in Australia / New Zealand, renting apartments in Melbourne, Paris, Sydney, Bangkok, etc. (for home bases). Your replies are appreciated.
Happy Travels.

Never travelled with just one, so can't really compare, but no real difference to being at home, especially when they are very small. Had a side by side lay down stroller (end on end just does not work on the road), which they slept in besides out bed. It was actually less trouble when they were quite little before they started crawling, at least you knew where they were all of the time.
I think there was more disruption for friends we stayed with, it was our normal busy routine so did not seem any different. Kids travelled fine on the planes (I know some don't), swooped on by clucky flight crew. Car trips tended to lull them to sleep, so could actually catch up time together when you were on the road.
Finding change rooms in unfamilar surroundings where I could not read the language was a bit of a hassle. Have you considered a rv trip somewhere close to home to get yourself organised before you branch out. After a tester here we realised we could ditch about half our stuff (you still don't travel real light though - ditching the unwieldy pram and change/bottle bag was a personal high point I can tell you).
Did not use disposables apart from on planes as I hate the environmental damage and found no problem sourcing places to wash all the nappies.
If you go somewhere a bit remote twins will attract heaps of attention, to the extent it slows up moving around somewhat.
I personally think that South Island NZ would be a nice road trip, good medical care on hand, and would go in the southern spring. If Australia I would choose either Tasmania (not over winter) or a slow trip up the east coast so you do not have too many hours on the road.
Good luck!

I agree with Backup who suggests South Island New Zealand (I am a New Zealander so biased). As he says its a beautiful place and well worth the trip but shouldn't be too stressful. Our roads are good and easy to drive on and the traffic is light.
My brother in law runs a small campervan hire company from Christchurch if you are interested. I think that would be a great way to travel with twins (and my advice would be to go before they can walk) as you would always have a kitchen and bedroom with you. We are just about to set out on an RV trip in California with our 6 year old and 18 months toddler on the same logic.
Send me a personal message if you would like details of the campervan hire.

Hiya fellow twin parents!
We have boy-girl twins, now 13 months old. We're Australians heading to Europe in July for 3-4 months of travel.
Yep, a bit scared but hey, what the hell, we can do it at home, so we can do it anywhere!! ; )
We're leasing a car and doing a combination of camping/friends/family/apartments for longer stays/ and cheap hotels. So far I've found that many places dont have 2 cots or say they dont have enough room for 2 in the rooms.
Our plan is to get them used to their own "swag" - foam mat with sleeping bag - so that when we roll it out they'll feel at home where ever they are.
We've done some camping without dramas - although that was when they were about 5mths - but we plan to do a few more trips in the next few months.
I'd love to keep in contact and share experiences.
Good luck
Jen

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. We'll keep you posted on our first trip. feraliris got me thinking about a camping trip this summer to see how things go and build up some confidence, thanks ! NZ is truly a beautiful place and we would love to go back. I like the campervan idea. Also, I like the idea of the campervan trip up the East Coast of Australia, could be a nice way to see the coast and have a moving home base for the littlies.
Any other twin parents out there ? I would love to hear about your experiences.
Thanks again,
Mike
