My hubby and I are planning to go to NZ this October. We'll be travelling from London with our 6 month baby.
We are planning to go for a total of 3 weeks including coming back via Brisbane to visit some family there and stay there for 6 days. Thought of hiring a campervan or something similar. More interested in countryside than cities. Love to do Whale watching, fly fishing and mixing with the locals in general.
Could anyone give us good suggestions as realistic budget, where to go, things to do, best way to travel around, stopovers, places to stay etc..
Thanks a lot for your help
Patti

Hi Patti... first of all welcome to New Zealand...
October is one of the better months of the year to travel but the weather can be a bit unsettled. 3 weeks isnt that long in NZ but it can be done!!
Fly fishing... try Taupo. its a bit touristy and it will be the tail end of the ski season so accomodation should be ok to find. Taupo is close to Rotorua (Rottenrua) which is a pretty interesting place with lots of thermal activity...
Whale waching is at the top of the South Island. I havnt done it myself yet but have been told that it is fantastic. Around that region is very beautiful, the locals are great too. Nelson and Golden Bay are must do's. Slap on a child carrier and go for a walk down the Able Tasman park.
Campervans are ok but you may be better off in 3 weeks to hire a car and stay in motels (about $80 per night). For a 3 week trip I would suggest flying some of the major legs... ie fly from Auckland to Nelson (rather than taking the ferry).
if you book a air ticket early you can ge some great deals... book online at airnz.co.nz
another great site for accomodaton is holidayhouses.co.nz also wotif.com has some good NZ stuff if you want budget luxury.
Enjoy!!
